OMKARA

I had been holding myself long to watch this movie before I grabbed it and blew myself away with an ultimate flick of the year. Inspired by greatest tragedy of all times by William Shakespear “Tragedy of Othello”, this movie is set with the background of Indian village. When I first saw movie’s trailer, which says “Adopted from Othello”, I always wondered how can someone adopt a drama which was written in and around 1603. To my surprise, Vishal Bhardwaj (director) does one of the best adoptions of the drama. Hats off to him for the adoption and easily converting it to suit the modern audience. I wonder how many such adoption do justice to the original classic.

Lets look at different aspect of the movie one by one.

Characters:

Characters are perfectly crafted and they have done their best in their roles. Saif ali khan as “Langda Tyagi” simply steals the show to say the least. He simply owns everybody else in the movie by sheer character and attitude. However as usual, Ajay Devgan as “Omkara” plays perfect Clan leader as he did in some of his earlier movies. (Watch Apaharan for a similar role). Although, Vivek Oberoi seem out of place sometime and not upto the mark with other actors. After a short while in the movie, you would realize that the characters needs to be a “Looser” and he simply looks like one. Director chose the perfect loose of Indian cinema J

Kareena Kapoor wont forget this role for atleast next 3-4 years and surely cherish this as one of her best movies.

Storyline/Dialogue:

Storyline is excellent and it moves faster as it reaches half way. Once “Langda Tyagi” realizes that he is getting neglected and that shot where he stands in front of the mirror and breaks it, starts the real action in the movie. That scene is so important in the movie that it shows all the anger and hatred which sets pace for the movie. Director asked Saif Ali Khan to go naked while doing the scene to epitomize the importance of the scene. Saif agreed however said, you need to handle censor board for clearing this scene. Later Director decided to let it go. I wouldn’t be talking much about the story details otherwise it would be a “spoiler”.

Although many of critics have accussed of using excessive foul language in the movie, I would still stand by the director for the sheer importance of realism. Cmon, this movie is shot in UP where we know that language is not gonna be “Polished”. To create a sense of realism and giving story a “soul”, it was needed and I didn’t find it excessive. About explicit scenes in the movie, they do make a justice and don’t look like a “B grade film scenes”. It was importance to show how Omkara and dolly build their relation and to what extent are they close to each other. Remember this movie is not about just OMKARA, it’s a movie of 4 characters whose life changes after one decision.

Director has managed to end the movie on a different note unlike original Othello where Iago (Landa Tyagi) is taken off to be
tortured and possibly executed. Considering the background and storyline, director obviously chose a different end which is not too different that the original concept.
